4 Questions to Helge Förster

“We help to improve public transport”

The HÜBNER Group is represented at locations around the world. General Manager Helge Förster explains the advantages this brings in delivery reliability for customers and the company’s climate performance.

We have a very broad product portfolio that we offer through our network of Group companies. This makes it possible for us to support our customers in many different areas. We understand the train as an integrated system. This comprehensive approach and our 75 years of experience as an independent company make us special – also in comparison to the competition. In addition to this, we benefit from interdisciplinary exchange and a high degree of expertise across the whole mobility sector. This makes it possible for us to actively participate in the development of new means of transport and to help make real improvements in public transport. One example of this is our new steering system for 30-meter-long high-capacity buses – a world first in public transport.

As a company, we are broadly positioned. We have a global presence with over 30 locations in 17 countries. This allows us to produce for our customers in a very targeted and customized way and typically in their direct vicinity. Through these short delivery routes, we minimize the risk that our products will have to be transported over long sea routes. In addition, we produce the key materials for our products such as rubber, silicone and textiles in-house. This also increases our supply security while reducing our dependence on third parties. Through these integrated value-creation and supply chains we achieve operational stability – for our customers and for our own company.

We are continually optimizing our processes so as to manufacture our products in the most climate-friendly ways possible. One current example is our new Silicone Competence Center in Ortrand, Germany, where we’ve implemented a new more climate-friendly production process. This has made it possible for us to achieve substantial reductions in our emissions. Another example is our construction in Nyíregyháza, Hungary, of an ultra-modern plant for rubber compounds. Here, too, we have been able to significantly reduce emissions thanks to new filter technology. And we also offer highly efficient life-cycle services and maintenance concepts, which are supported by digital platforms like HUBLink – our own in-house development. This also makes a contribution to achieving more sustainability.

It makes a very real difference. The short delivery routes allow us to effectively reduce harmful emissions. We do not only do everything possible to produce as sustainably as possible, we also aim to transport our products to their point of use with the customer in the most climate-friendly ways available. Our advantage here is that with our global presence it’s possible for us to produce locally in almost all markets and to support our customers in a climate-friendly way with short delivery routes. One example of this is the expansion of our location in Bangalore, India, which will put us in an even better position to supply important future projects in India and the Asia-Pacific region. At the same time, our headquarters in Kassel, Germany, continues to be an important production location for projects in Europe. We are very convinced that short delivery routes are crucial for ensuring dependable deliveries and for achieving the best climate results.

Siemens Mobility in Egypt

For the Egyptian project of Siemens Mobility, HÜBNER is supplying 105 high-speed gangways, including an option on an additional 182 gangways for a total of 41 trains. The Egyptian project also includes 41 Vectron freight locomotives, which, like the locomotives for the Velaro high-speed trains and Desiro high-speed regional trains, will be equipped with EBuLa 7900 driver assistance systems from HÜBNER's subsidiary Gersys.

Australia

Metro Trains Melbourne

New bellows and an outer covering between the train and the edge of the platform – that was the scope of a refurbishment in Australia. HÜBNER has implemented a new technical solution for more safety for Metro Trains in Melbourne.

Canada

Vancouver Skytrain Passenger Rail Cars

Gersys develops and supplies BC39 family of multifunction displays for Alstom Canada for the Vancouver Skytrain Passenger Rail Cars. Together with HUBNER USA, an innovative solution for the smallest space and customer-specific requirements could be realized.

USA

Siemens SacRT Amtrak

In the Siemens SacRT Amtrak project, 419 gangways produced by the Hubner Manufacturing Corporation are being used – in the states of Maine, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington.

India

Vande Bharat Express (“Train 18”)

The Vande Bharat Express in India is part of the fourth largest rail network of the world. The Indian Railways project is also know known as “Train 18”. In an initial installment, HÜBNER India is supplying 285 gangways.

China

Metro Xiamen Line 6 and Nanjing Line 6

HÜBNER Shanghai is delivering 215 gangways for the Metro Nanjing Line 6. 84 gangways are being produced for the Methro Xiamen Line 6. Both projects are being realized by CRRC.

Europe I

Alstom Flexity Berlin

HÜBNER is supplying more than 460 gangways for the Alstom Flexity in Berlin (low-floor trams).  The gangways consist of a corrugated bellows, a turning plate and pitching articulation.

Europe II:

VDV Tram-Train in Germany/Austria

In an initial order, HÜBNER is supplying up to 1.008 gangway systems for the VDV Tram-Train project. It is the largest order in Stadler’s history, which the manufacturer secured following an international tender involving six transport companies from Germany and Austria. The contract also includes a service agreement over a period of up to 32 years.

A world first in public transport

A world first for public transport

    Innovative steering system
    for high-capacity buses

To put it simply, high-capacity buses are streetcars that run on rubber wheels – or trackless trams. They consist of three vehicle segments with a total of six axles and two gangways. Vehicle transport capacity is approximately 300 passengers.
High-capacity buses combine the advantages of both buses and trams – and they can be integrated into existing transport infrastructure without requiring the construction of a rail network. This makes them particularly suitable for cities that need expanded transport capacities in a short period of time.

    Why world first?
For the safe operation of high-capacity buses, a reliable steering system is essential. This must intelligently link all the six axles of the vehicle to allow for optimal control in urban traffic. The steering technology developed by the HÜBNER Group is designed so that in the event of a malfunction there is no danger for passengers or the surrounding area.
With this innovation, the HÜBNER Group is offering a unique feature in this area. Until now, there is no other system for road vehicles that can control more than two axles to this degree and provide safe steering operation.

Live at InnoTrans 2022: The new steering system in operation
The steering system from HÜBNER will be shown in operation one time per hour each day of the exhibition in the outdoor area (Booth O/220). The first demonstration will take place at 9:30 a.m. and the last exhibition at 5:30 p.m.
