We are ready to move
trams on the road
As cities continue to grow and the demands placed on urban infrastructure systems expand, new mobility solutions and new vehicle concepts are needed around the world. We see great potential in high-capacity buses – which dramatically expand the limits of traditional urban buses. With a length of more than 30 meters, high-capacity buses can transport as many as 300+ passengers. Indeed, they can best be thought of as trams running on rubber wheels.
Bus or tram - which should it be? Both!
High-capacity buses combine the advantages of both buses and trams in a new type of vehicle. The decisive factor: Unlike classic trams, high-capacity buses do not depend on a transport infrastructure that operates with its own track system. HÜBNER has a technological solution that makes this track infrastructure unnecessary.
With our self-developed steering system, the six or more axles of a high-capacity bus can be intelligently controlled when driving through urban spaces. This is a significant milestone because it allows the vehicles to be driven safely, for example, in BRT (bus rapid transit) systems. At the same time, high-capacity buses with the HÜBNER steering technology provide the same high level of comfort, safety and the sleek design found in trams.

Steering technology in accordance
with ISO standard 26262
For the safe operation of high-capacity buses, a reliable steering system is essential. The steering technology from the HÜBNER Group has been developed in accordance with the current requirements for functional safety as specified in ISO standard 26262 so that no risk occurs for passengers or the surroundings in the event of a malfunction. Bus and train manufacturers can make use of the new technology for high-capacity buses on a modular basis based on their individual production requirements.
Through the use of pre-developed system components, the new vehicle concept can be flexibly integrated into the infrastructure of growing cities. In addition, the HÜBNER steering system can be used in bi-directional operation – and it also has an interface for autonomous driving. This makes the HÜBNER steering system ready for future requirements in public mobility solutions. A further highlight is the system’s steer-by-wire interface that has already been integrated.
The ABSC system – At the heart of intelligent mobility
To make high-capacity buses work as an integral part of urban transport infrastructure, series-production vehicles need to operate on a fail-safe basis. That’s what HÜBNER’s newly developed Articulated Bus Steering Control System (ABSC system) provides. It’s a technological advance that will stand at the heart of intelligent mobility concepts for urban environments.
Groundbreaking technology as a modular system
HÜBNER will be offering the steering system as a modular solution – a combination of the proven articulation systems together with a consulting service to assist with the realization of the basic vehicle design. In this way it will be possible in future for customers to implement the new vehicle concepts quickly and economically and be in the position to meet the evolving demands of transport markets.
With this truly game-changing technology, HÜBNER now offers its partners the possibility to realize vehicles that economically bring together the advantages of the bus and the tram and introduce a new dimension in local public transport.
